We’ll cut to the chase. Intricate Beauty is the final “conventional” dance album King Britt will ever make. And how fitting this final chapter also marks King’s first ever release on seminal house music label Nervous Records (in partnership with FiveSixMedia). This is the seal of quality. Don’t worry, though, King Britt’s not going anywhere as an artist. He’ll be concentrating on more experimental based music and searching for new avenues to help push the live electronic improvisational end of performance. But for now, you have a real treat to behold with the Intricate Beauty. Eleven tracks of soulful rhythms constructed and mixed together like a grand jigsaw puzzle. Quintessential King.

Intricate Beauty pulls together the different sounds that have helped shape King’s dance DJ mind over the years. This is the story of what he loves to spin and how it all relates. In a sense, this is all the greatness of King Britt wrapped up under one disc. Like a physical incarnation of the intricate mind, the process of how this album was constructed is quite advanced. King based the album on tiny microsounds he procured from various random recordings and CDs. He then took all these tiny pieces and dumped them into Ableton Live where he sewed the puzzle pieces together. Once there were approximately 50 workable combinations of tracks he then constructed the songs musically. “In a few months I intend to release all the bits and pieces from Intricate Beauty as a “Live Pack.” These will be sounds that people can use for inspiration and production,” King says

Beyond the album, this is a period of great change for King Britt. Not only is he working in a
new studio but he’s also cleansed spiritually; something that has also enabled him to enter into a new creative space with his newest venture Saturn Never Sleeps with multimedia artist Rucyl (www.saturnneversleeps.com/about)

“When you find your path and stick with it, you’re bound to hit a pentacle period of productivity. I feel that in the next three years you’ll really see and hear many sides of me musically. Mentally, physically and spiritually I have grown multitudes and have a very clear understanding of who I am and what I’m here for. Many of the lyrics on the album express some of these ideas.”

It’s been 20 years on the music scene for King Britt and his projects, collaborations and affiliations are always truly mind-blowing. From his time as Silkworm in the groundbreaking, Grammy winning Digable Planets, to starting Ovum Recordings with Josh Wink, producing platinum remixes for Macy Gray, Solange, Donna Lewis and hundreds of others, winning the highest grant in the country as the first dj/producer, The Pew Fellowship or starting his empire, FiveSixMedia, King Britt still tries to live in the NOW and not the then.

Well, its been a minute since I released an album of original material. The Intricate Beauty will be coming this March/April on Nervous/FiveSix. I had a great time working on it and collaborating with the beautiful singers, Rucyl Mills, Lady Alma, Ryat and Astrid Suryanto, as well as remixing Kim English and Byron Stingly exclusives for the album.

This album will be my last 'conventional' dance album. I have been inching more into experimental electronica and techno, like The Nova Dream Sequence and Ramon Tejada w/ Rucyl Mills.

When I was a kid, I was fortunate enough to be exposed to some of the greatest music of all time. First, I lived in Philadelphia, second, my parents were music collectors and took me wherever they went. So growing up in the 70's in Philadelphia was the shaping of who I am today.

I have so many stories I could tell you about the effect that this gentleman named Theodore DeReese "Teddy" Pendergrass. He was called TP in our household.

My mom is into going to church and becoming emotional. When you are 7, you find it interesting that this man or woman in the pullpit has such an incredible power over the people (maybe this lead to me djing). She would get flustered, excited, sad, all the emotions in a matter of an hour. Now I realized church was a very moving experience.

So one night, I was able to stay up late and watch television with my mom. A tall gentleman comes on the screen and I hear screams, but the loudest was from my mother. All the emotions that she showed in church, were back. So I thought this was a religious show. Far from it. Teddy Pendergrass was gyrating, sweating and giving the people what they wanted, raw sexual energy. This was my introduction to TP. I asked my mom more questions, like why are you screaming like that, why is his shirt open all the way, etc. She just replied, "Son, he is a 'real' man!" Ill never forget it.

TP was one of the most important influences on R&B music. There would be no R.Kelly, Brain McNight or D'Angelo if TP hadn't paved the way. He started out as a drummer first, which i just found out today! Then he was in the legendary Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. His raspy, aggressive voice was the charisma of that outfit. Bad Luck was a huge song in the clubs, especially New York's Paradise Garage. But it was If You Dont Know Me By Now (covered by Simple Red later), that took the charts and the stores by storm!

TP later went solo (with Gamble and Huff's Philadelphia International) and brought us some of the best music ever! You Cant Hide From Yourself, Close the Door and my mom's favorite, Turn off the Lights.

I also remember, he was one of the only artists to do all 'women only' shows, which became legendary !!!!!!

In '82 he was in a very bad accident in his car, which left him paralyzed. He still was able to sing and did so on many occasion.

3 years ago I had the honor of meeting him in one of my favorite cafes. I was with Rachel Claudio on a studio break. I was all shy and didnt want to go over. She convinced me and he was the coolest person. He was with his family and took the time to exchange words.

He will always be remembered as a great R&B legend who truly was the 'real' deal. Be Free TP !

RUTH ANN CUNNINGHAM- BE FREE

A few years ago, I received a call from my publishing company, Universal, about collaborating with a new 'singer' named Ruth Ann Cunningham. She was from Dublin and had been a pretty famous writer, doing hits for JoJo, Katherine McFee and Pixie. She also won the ASCAP writer's award. They were about to embark on a collaborative situation and she wanted to work with me. They flew her to Philly and we met at the studio. I hadnt heard her voice yet, but was up for whatever the universe says.

She was I think 21 and tiny. I had no clue what to expect. I made 3 tracks in a day and she was writing full songs in a matter of an hour or so. She had most of the vocal arrangements done in her head. So the moment came where she was to sing. I was in the control room like, oh sh*t, this girl is unreal. She really put it down.
Her management weren't really into the tunes for her pop album, but we made an amazing musical connection. 2 songs will be on the new SYLK130 album, due out in fall 2010. The song Be Free is here for you to enjoy. This song is a preview of whats to come. (demo stage..as is...)

ESPO x ARI x KING BRITT

My fiance has been telling me to really get into my blog more, so, thats one of my 2010 goals. I have many friends who are doing great things. So I wanted to start with 2 of my longtime buddies, Ari Forman and Steve Powers aka Espo. Two Philadelphia graf artists that went on to do really amazing work.....

First up, Ari Forman. This cat and I used to work in a mall in Philly called the Gallery. I always thought he was one of the coolest peeps in the 80s...always pushing the envelope of his surroundings visually. Anyway, not only did he tag but he was an amazing graphic artist as well. He and Espo started On the Go Magazine and took hip hop culture by storm. Anyhow he moved to NYC in the early 90s, where he has turned On the Go into a media empire. One of my fave projects by him is the Ari sneaker. Check the video below.

Next up is the legendary Espo, whom I met thru Ari. We havent stayed in touch like Ari and I have, but messages are relayed and emails exchanged, bada bada...! Anyway, Espo left for NYC first and was super instrumental in making graf recognized in the modern art world. He has gone on to do installations in some of the world's most prestigious spaces. He has a grip of book published and one of my fave projects you can check below.

Last but not least, I had the honor to record these two on my debut album, King Britt presents Sylk130- When the Funk Hits The Fan, which is being re-issued fall 2010. We did a song dedicated to graf artists worldwide called Taggin and Braggin. Features Capitol A on rhyme. Enjoy!

He is one of the most prolific cats in the game. So prolific, that he has tons of ‘throw away’ beats that he posts. One of them was what is now Ways to Go featuring his sister Marjani.
